New in MacChess 5.0 Rotterdam December 1998
First, a special "thank you" to Richard A. Fowell.
He helped test MacChess 5.0 and proofread my English.
Special thanks also to everyone that gave me support and advice by
sending me postcards and email.

====== NEW FEATURES ======
1. Designed a new move generator with the following advances:
- the program is 200 Kb smaller
- now generates a legal move list, which allows it to detect forced moves -
this allows it to find some deep mates very quickly in the normal search
2. Checks that moves obtained from the transposition are legal before using them.
Older versions of MacChess could crash because of illegal transposition moves.
Now it is fixed for ever.
3. Changed the size of the nodes and nodes/second variables
from 32 bits to 64 bits. The "nodes" display in the "Info" window
in MacChess 4.0 could overflow in as little as 3 hours.
Now it won't overflow in five years.
4. Added a larger chess board and a optimized Classic piece set for it.
Richard Fowell optimized his American piece set for this too. (Thanks again)
Other piece sets are scaled when used with the larger board.
5. Added a result pop-up menu in the “Game Info” window.
Also, automatically fills in game result in "Game Info" when known.
6. Designed new icons for: game, opening book and preference files.
7. The players' names are shown in the board window after loading a MacChess
game. (the same as loading a PGN game)
8. Split the preference window into two parts: General and Chessboard.
Added these preference options:
- Board size: Normal, Bigger.
- Sliding pieces: speed.
- Piece letters in different languages.
- Changed the label of the “Sound” checkbox to “Beep”
9. Enlarged the “Info” and “Main Line” window (width).
Info window:
- Enlarged the Numbers of nodes and nodes/second displays to 14 digits.
- Added a + sign to positive scores.
Main Line window:
- Changed the “PV” window label to “Main Line”.
- Added Move numbers.
- “Copy” with "Main Line" window in front includes move numbers.
10. All dialog boxes with a title bar are now movable:
- Setup
- Preferences
- Level
- Analyse times (new)
11.Added a new time setting dialog for “Analyze ... Positions”.
It is simplified and you can set time or depth.
12.Changed the level dialog and:
Added to the Tournament time (Choice times):
- A third time control.
- Separate times for white and black.
- Increment time of maximum 99 seconds per move for each color.
Added a Sudden Death game level with the following pre-defined times:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes per game.
An alert box notifies you of time forfeits.
Added input boxes to Fixed depth and Mate levels:
- Fixed depth -> max 64 ply
- Mate-in -> max 32 moves
Included “Save Level Settings” in the level dialog box.
13.Added the following quick level settings in the “Level” menu.
- Easy 1
- Easy 2
- Easy 3
- Easy 4
- 1 second / 60
- 3 seconds/ 60
- 5 seconds/ 60
- 15 seconds/ 60
- 30 seconds/ 60
- 60 seconds/ 60

14.The opening book file size is now displayed as the number of book moves.
(This is displayed in the book window and the about window)
15. Removed the special “mate finder” and included the mate search into
the normal search.
16. Changed the behaviour when a mate is found in the normal search:
old: the search stopped after an iteration (all moves done)
if a mate had been found.
result: might halt with a mate in 8 when a mate in 4 was possible.
new: Search proceeds, according the time left, or depth,
if the depth of the mate found is less than the iteration depth.
17.Added some knowledge for the following end games
- KQ-KP
- KP-KQ.
- KR-KN
- KN-KR
- KR-KB
- KB-KR
- KRN-KR
- KR-KRN
- KRB-KR
